Well, that served us right. We improved in the 2nd half, scored and then decided to give up the ghost and let Portsmouth do whatever they wanted. 12 shot of which only 1 was on target.

We've got two goalies on the bench and three international central forward players out on loan ? I give up !

Team selection not too bad tonight, but no Trippier even on the bench.

20 Oct 2026 20:34:55
2 GK on the subs bench !?!?

20 Oct 2026 20:35:12
We've been so poor so far. Without Trippier and Raul we just look like we're out of ideas. There seems to be a reluctance to cross or have a shot.

2

20 Oct 2026 20:37:49
No speed or urgency, too many touches. They don't look as if they've an idea going forward or have been told not to risk it.
Second half can't be as bad, can it ?

20 Oct 2026 20:42:21
Only saving graces are that we aren't 1 nil down, and that it cannot get worse than that 2nd half.

20 Oct 2026 21:36:03
Serves em right.doyle pathetic challenge. better 2nd half. but still pathetic performance.disgraceful showing against a rubbish team.doyle shouldnt even be on the bench.

Back 3 of Djiga, Mosquera and Krejci ? With Rodrigo and Hugo as wing - backs. FWAW.

Hope we can get a win tonight, be interesting, maybe scary to see the team as CP suggests changes.
Sorry state when Toti is captain and starts ahead of Krejci as he seems to have left already, really hoped he would get his head down and attempt to prove what a good player he is. Surely he has to try and impress any other coaches out there, maybe he has something lined up already.

Hope we start with our best team possible, whatever that is, and make changes later on when hopefully we are winning 🤞👍
I am still not keen on Sa, sorry, on crosses and corners I have no confidence that he won't try and claim the ball, either hit his own player or get knocked to the ground by a 5ft 0 giant.

Number 2
Right back/wing back
The obvious options are Trippier, formerly a top class Prem league player but who is now very much on the down slope of his career or Jackson T a young superb athlete who sadly is a very poor footballer.

Not unsurprisingly neither is an optimum solution and clearly neither would be able to step up next year if Wolves were to be promoted.
Indeed given the rate of degradation in Trippier's physical attributes it is probable that Wolves will have to address this issue next summer regardless.

For this season my first choice would have to be Trippier, although it will require the manager to give greater thought than he currently is doing to find ways in which he can be protected or not left isolated 1 on 1 against quicker wingers.
However it is obvious that he won't be able to play every game in such a crowded season and may indeed miss whole sections of the season with injuries.

Consequently Jackson or perhaps other off the wall options - Yerson, (as a conventional RB) or Gomes R., (as a RWB), might have to be considered.
Jackson is an adequate defender due to his extremely strong physical profile - fast and reasonably strong - and played purely as a RB with no attacking responsibilities he might, by an intelligent coach, be hidden in the side. To date however the manager has failed to find that solution and his selection both places extra pressure on the RCB - Djiga - and substantially reduces that attacking output down that side of the pitch.

Hence RB/RWB is another difficult issue.
It is hard to see how a competent club would have got here.
Jackson is a player that it would be easy to see playing in the lower leagues or even non league football and be fooled into believing that he could be an option at a higher level.

His pace, steady defensive effort and ability to burst forward - albeit not with any quality on the ball - could easily lead you to believe he was a rough diamond.
{I watch a lot of York games and their RB Joe Felix is a perfect example - in fact he is almost certainly a better player than Jackson - but I very much doubt he earns a year what Jackson earns a fortnight and would be available i feel fairly certain for less than a 1/10th of the fee Wolves insanely paid for Jackson.}
If true it appears that Wolves not far short placed a 0 on the end of Jackson's previous salary - completely bonkers!!!

He is therefore almost certainly unsaleable.
Trippier was given a very high wage,(£100k per week?), two year contract but looking at his physical decline he almost certainly will be "done" to all intents and purposes by the end of this season. Could he be converted into a coach?

Otherwise if Wolves are promoted he would need to be sold but even on free that will be hard/impossible. If Wolves are not promoted he presumably will play on but will require even greater protection and probably will play even less.

I understand why he was signed - if he stays fit and in reasonable shape he should be far too good for this league - but given the wages - as i said allegedly £100k a week - this was effectively a £10m bet on promotion this year.
Clearly we will never know but i wonder what other options he had and did Wolves effectively bid against themselves?
Another total mess that demonstrates incompetence at all levels!

The real incompetence TFISOG3 is not having an experienced back up striker to Raul. Whilst I agree with what you say regarding Trippier we do have options in that position & I favour RG. He has energy to burn, pacy, can deliver a decent ball & most importantly step up & score the odd goal. At the moment if we persist in playing Armstrong it's almost pointless delivering a cross into the box because he won't get to it. Everything has to be played on the floor & I think opposition teams know this.

Back to your question regarding Trippier. He can deliver a quality ball into the box from set pieces etc, but if we've no-one to get on the end of them then it's pointless. That for me shows the level of incompetence in only really have Armstrong as an experienced striker. Mind you we should be getting used to it by now. Was it last year we were crying out for an attacking midfielder, the year before a centre half & neither transpired.

Blacksford you need to be patient till I get to number 9!
However thanks for responding to the post.
Appreciate any comments on numbers 1 and 2.
As I said I don't think Gomes R is a bad shout as an option especially if Wolves are going to revert to a back 3 as per Preston's post.
Number 3 on Wednesday.

Watched the women's team play Ipswich at Telford yesterday and what a good game of football it was, a tale of two halves no doubt.
In fine Wolves tradition they were 2-0 down by half time looking outplayed across the park. Not sure what was said at half time but with a couple of substitutions it was like watching a different side in the second half.
Wolves dominated, pulled one back but the equaliser was a 35 yard absolute screamer that beat the keeper hands down.

Finishing 2-2 as a cup match it was then down to penalties Wolves winning 7-6.
No hysterical arm waving, brandishing of imaginary cards, going down rolling about trying to get players sent off, surrounding the ref and so on. So refreshing and well done Wolves ladies.

You are right Long, a well earned result.

Tonight will be a tricky game, but one we should win. Portsmouth have 11 players unfit and have recalled a player from Poole Town, to make up the numbers. Please start Neave up top, offers so much more than Armstrong. 2-1 wolves. Up the wolves.

And I thought we had an injury curse Willow, thats crazy.

20 Oct 2026 14:15:05
Is that 11 team or club willow? They beat Norwich away 1-0 Saturday and are looking to extend their form at the mol tonight.
I wouldn't underestimate them at all, think Bolton, we're gonna have to be on it from the go.
Talking of injuries, it seems Armstrong may be fit to play, will we be seeing the back line looking more familiar too ? CP isn't proving an easy one to predict.

Think we should win, expect us to win, but, Bolton, there I've mentioned it again! I won't be counting anything until we're 2 up. COYW.

If you read the various sites the range of selection issues is enormous and the views on them equally wide.
So let's start at number 1- the goalkeeper.
The current options are the long established number 1 Sa or the not young but extremely inexperienced Virginia.

Although Sa is far far from popular on SM and is undeniably erratic, poor both with his feet and on crosses and possibly "moody" I do not believe he is anywhere near as bad as some make him out to be.

However for me the biggest issue harks back to his attitude. If one goes with Virginia on the basis of just one, to be fair, decent performance - and virtually no senior football behind him despite being 25 ??? - and he doesn't work out - which has to be a real possibility, then Wolves will be obliged to go back to Sa.
We saw how that went when he was dropped for Johnstone and there has to be a real possibility that he will have thrown his toys out of the pram and Wolves will be in real trouble again!

It is of course ridiculous that I can even imagine that Wolves are effectively being held to ransom by a player who "might" throw a hissy fit if he is dropped and possibly not be a "good pro" ready to perform when called upon next?
But given the very poor management of the club at all levels it is not beyond the realms of possibilities!

I am therefore reluctantly coming down on the same side as the club and picking Sa until his performances fall to the level that some of the more hyperbolic on SM believe they currently are.

Obviously this is far from satisfactory and in reality Wolves clearly should have sold both Johnstone and Sa and bought a new gk in the summer.
Wolves were linked to the homegrown and young Vitek who left Man U for £7m to Boro.

Although he has played regularly this season he has not pulled up trees being rated in line with Jose Sa by most sites but there are several other goalkeepers who could have been bought who apparently have played very well so far this year including the homegrown lad at WBA bought for a mere £2.3m!
But Wolves failed to sell Johnstone and I am not sure they tried that hard to sell Sa.

Of course it is not easy as clearly neither are top quality players, both have obvious playing flaws and more importantly both have shown themselves to be not good pros with poor attitudes. They are also both on far higher wages than they should be.

But the biggest issue is of course that Wolves have built a long established reputation for selling cheap and were clearly distressed sellers so it was always going to be difficult. Looking at the numbers though, not only has the decision to keep Sa meant that the GK issue remains unresolved - Sa by the way is an overseas player and on his last contract being 33 now and 35 when it ends in 2 years time -but it is also a disaster financially.

The cost of Vitek over 5 years - wages and fees was a mere £12m, (plus the add ons you are delighted to pay as it means the club/player has been successful meaning £2.4m a year. O'leary the WBA boy comes in at an even more attractive £1.25m. Whilst Sa is on £3.75m a year so far more expensive.

Of course it is worse than that as Sa should have raised a modest fee making the trade of Vitek/O'leary in Sa out even more profitable! So the first issue unsurprisingly occurs because Wolves were totally incompetent in the transfer market this summer.
