There was mention that Evangelos Marinakis sold him from one of his clubs (Rio Ave) to another (Olympiakos) for an inflated price, so that some other mug will pay big bucks for a player who, let's be honest, hasn't really set the world on fire.



Let Marinakis and Mendes cosy up in bed together, and let us buy players that have a proven track record rather than some potential from the Mendes stable.

Sources from Spain suggest Wolves were looking to sign Alex Calatrava from Castellon, who had an impressive season in La Liga 2, scoring 14 goals and had 8 assists, and is a versatile attacker, playing as a striker as well as a rw/cam.

Cesar Poixito is also interested in him. But the deal did not go through and Espanyol signed him for just 5 million. Shows a clear lack of ambition from Wolves.

Something is out of kilter, or are Nuno's needs greater than ours! The snake has definitely lost interest in us, but the manager is one of his 'flock', so can anybody explain what is going on.

Nuno is just Mendes' client. Fosun actually have shares in Mendes' agency. I highly doubt anyone going to West Ham isn't even being considered by Wolves.

It's a fair question, D, and one that only the people at the club will have an answer for. I suspect it will mean that we will end up selling him at a lower fee than first hoped, or we will sell someone else to make up said shortfall. As I said a week ago, I don't think it's a coincidence that we suddenly seem to be circulating a £30m price stage for Mane since the Gomes deal ground to a halt. Then there is Krecji and Sa, who I suspect will be looking to move after the WC.

In short, D, I'm sure the Gomes deal collapsing is a problem, but these things happen. Like I said, I'm not surprised, though, because the deal has clearly been stalling for a while, so the club can't be too shocked. Transfer windows are a marathon and not a sprint, not to mention the fact that it seems to be silly season on CM prices, which increasingly makes Gomes look like decent value, to be honest. 👍

I hear people saying "there is loads of time" and "other clubs aren't doing much either", but that has been their mantra for the last dozen or so windows, and none of them worked out well!
Just like you get people saying "give them a chance" when they have had countless chances since Seville to change the inexorable, headlong charge to relegation, and took none of them!
Also, most clubs don't have quite so much to do as Wolves, who, of course, need to undo the damage that has been done these last few years.
As to sell to buy, obviously, it depends on the finances of the club, which are opaque at best.
I did post previously, however, that it is possible to keep the better players, (Gomes, Andre and Krejci), pay down the debt, and put together a highly competitive side by simply selling the surplus/inadequate players, (which, even conservatively, should raise well over £100m), as long, of course, as you buy sensibly, (i.e.

frees, loans and a smattering of cheap young prospects).
An incredibly cheap side such as
Nick Pope (modest fee)
Trippier, Yerson, Mings (v modest fee), Krejci, Wolfe
Andre, Gomes
Mane, Jimenez, Armstrong
would be very competitive, although I accept the bench might be thin.
Selling a dozen-plus players, though, will not be easy, and Wolves need to be working harder to sell the deadwood in the squad.

I agree, TFIOG. I think some plans have been shelved after Edwards left. But I reckon the signings of Trippier and Raul will be the best this summer.
I think Joao Gomes may stay. Not sure how I feel about it. As he is a great bloke and player. But we wouldn't have changed the dynamic in midfield...
I would like some new midfield talent brought in so we can play a midfield 3 or 2.
Then we are looking at 3 new cbs and 3 or 4 forwards/wingers.


With Krejci, Santi Bueno, Toti, Mosquera, Jackson, Hwang, Johnstone and Tolu sold.
There are also players like Bellagarde and Sasa I'm not sure where they fit in at the moment.
It would be nice to see Cesar start to put a few plans in progress, like 2 cbs to play his preferred back 4.
And some pace up front is long overdue after the torture of last season.
I'm sure plans will move the next week with training starting back up again...

Just to be clear, D, I'm not saying that I'm not worried; it was more regarding Gomes' transfer, where I'm more saying that I'm not surprised. Clearly, we have a lot of work to do in the window, but if Atletico aren't willing to meet Gomes' very reasonable fee, then I'm not sure what else there is to do? If we sold him at half the price, then us fans would (rightly) be even more alarmed. The reality is we need to sell about half our first team, and if clubs aren't interested in them right now, then I'm not sure what else we are supposed to do? The only players that are moving so far this window are the best cms in the league (at insane prices); other than that, most clubs seem to be waiting till after the WC is done. I get what you're saying, TFG (as usual:), but when you say they need to be working harder, the reality is a) we don't know what's going on in the background, b) if clubs are waiting till after the WC then realistically what can we do to change that position, and c) this is a likely consequence of changing manager less than two weeks ago!
The only thing they could do is a fire sale/flogging players on the cheap, and can you honestly say that would be better for the club?
So, by no stretch am I saying that I'm not worried, but what I am saying is that I've seen enough of these windows with Fosun now to know that there is (literally) no point in panicking until we actually see how the window's going to pan out.

If Atletico don't want to pay £40m for Gomes, then what's the answer? Sell him for £20m? Cause that's what got us to where we are now, so (frankly) that would worry me far more. 👍

BB, first of all, you are of course correct on both points.
Wolves should not sell Gomes at a cut price - for me £40m is a cut price, but, and this links to the second point, you can only sell players if there is a buyer.
My foolish comment was borne out of frustration!
We have discussed at length why Wolves, (in my/our view), buys high and sells low!
Secondly, the point about selling to buy here is relevant, as I fear that Wolves don't buy to sell to buy, but in fact sell to survive.
Over the past half a dozen years, Wolves' net spend is negligible, and the cash generated from the sales - Wolves tend to buy on the never never and thus debt has risen - has been used to meet the club's other obligations - whatever they may be!
Hence, Wolves may well, as I say above, need to sell to sell to pay down debt, (and/or meet those unknown obligations), before even thinking about buying.
However, whilst Wolves may be working hard, given the sheer volume of work needing to be done, I'm frustrated that some of the obvious moves - that have been discussed on here - the swap of Johnstone and cash for the young Man U keeper, the swap of Pope and cash for Hugo Bueno, etc.

etc., have not been pushed/completed.
Whilst I don't want to admit it, the reality is, and the football world knows it, that it is a fire sale of deadwood, and so prices will be low.
However, given the sheer volume of players Wolves should be selling, it will raise not insignificant sums anyway.
Researching a variety of valuation sites, and taking conservative views, still gives a figure of roughly £150m for the ones that I would lose (Sa, Johnstone, Jackson, Hoever, Santi, Toti, Djiga, Hugo, Doyle, Fer Lopez, Munetsi, Slow Traore, Hwang, Bellegarde, and Tolu *(reluctantly as he may come good)).
This, as stated before, should be more than enough to rebuild and pay down debt!

Dmac, there is ample cause for worry because we have recent history of poorly managed windows. Both Bully and Tfig make good points about the possible causes of no movement, and money pressures. I guess if we are a week after the end of the WC, bearing in mind many teams are on the plane already, and there is still no movement, we will really have cause for concern.

Deadwood will not cut the mustard in a tough division. We need some old heads and some new young legs with desire to succeed.

Agreed, Fosun, mate. I was genuinely shocked when I saw the reported value of the bids (as it likely means £5m tops)! With the lad's background at Arsenal, England teams for most of his youth, and now 23 goals in League One at his age, then, like you say, absolute no-brainer! Not seen McCleary, but there's plenty of talent that has shone at lower levels, and Fosun have never done enough to explore or respect that market.

Lope wanted Scott, and Perriera wanted Hackney; in both cases, we would refuse to pay enough to get the deals done. Hackney went on to be player of the season in the Champ, and exactly the type of player we absolutely needed! And in Scott's case, he's gone on to be worth at least double his price already. I'd like to think we've learnt from such things, but I've yet to see the proof. Let's hope they sign Ballard and prove me wrong. 👍

If Bristol City started the bidding at £2-3m, I suspect you are correct and that £5m is the correct price.
At those levels, Wolves, as shown in my previous posts, could comfortably add 3 or 4 young prospects to bolster the squad.
