We won’t sign Erickson, doesn’t fit into Nuno’s type. However can see us signing someone like Luka Jovic which could be a good shout at replacing Raul for this season.

I still can’t help but feel we need a proven and solid centre half, still letting in goals and lost a lot of games. Our goal difference is shocking. Boly back and Coady with Siass and one other. Are we really saying Kilman is good enough to take us top 6? (Although done well)

I don’t think we will panic buy, even with injuries. Definitely buy a striker and owners I think will be okay with top 10 this season.

Next we’ll have Jonny, Raul and new signings all fit. Be an incredible squad with kids having experience. Could this season have been avoided. yes, with better strategy and signings, small squad never going to compete in this league but it’s not a disaster. In Nuno we trust!

E&S have reported “No Big January Signings” apparently Wolves are looking at the Lon market for a forward to replace Raul. Well and good, however not having a backup forward really need to be addressed during the next window.

Wolves we very lucky the past two seasons regarding injuries, but it’s bit us on the proverbial having such a small squad, not even a small squad but a lot of young players.

Some good points Dreaming.
Agree I don't see us buying Ericksen, (or sadly for that matter Jovic), despite suggesting we do so twice earlier on this year as sadly as Bully pointed out when I commented on us missing out on Fernandes he simply won't come. We don't as yet have the aura of a big team and he will only join a side with that aura ( they don't have to be a big team in terms of ability etc but merely one that can pretend it is one - pay silly wages, play in a big stadium in a big city, have a "name" manager or crazy owners etc etc so Arsenal or even WHU count but us and even Leicester - who are prob the next or a similar team to us in the "real" big team league - don't)
Agree a RCB def required. I think we should revert to the 3CB and Kilman might be good enough to play LCB but is prob 3rd or even 4th choice whilst we don't actually have a RCB)
Agree we won't panic buy - not sure we will buy or even loan a "good" CF as that is v difficult - but hopefully will find a stop gap CF and a player or two who can strengthen the squad.
Agree we won't go down and owners will be accepting - not sure 10th is possible though. Hopefully 14th or 15th is as low as it goes. Current form, ( post Jimenez), both points and performances suggests lower but we are starting over the last 2 or 3 games to look a bit better and fixtures have been tough recently.
Agree that if we get everyone back and the new guys are fully bedded in - Semedo has looked much better in last couple of games - and we make the sensible signings that were needed this year and the one that is now obviously needed before next year, (Patricio like Moutinho and indeed all players have a shelf life and his is coming to an end soon - sell and replace before its obvious to all that it has), we will be fine. My fear is Jimenez won't come back as before but that is still an unknown.
Could this year have been better managed, well no one could have anticipated the Jimenez injury or the problems Semedo had when he first arrived, but obviously yes. Contingencies should have been in place for the possible (Jimenez getting injured or other players losing form or getting injured) and solutions found for the probable's (We didn't have a RCB and Moutinho was obviously NEVER NEVER going to be able to play 38 games a year as I pointed out before the season started - Why didn't the club see this? )
Sadly we did none of these and after 2 years when nothing went wrong we have run out of luck and have had several injuries/ problems and have consequently paid the price.

Thefutureisoldgold.
Good post. Lots of valid points.
Need some big performances from our more experienced players in the 2nd half of season and we'll be ok. CF obviously a must and sooner rather than later. Probably be someone we've never heard of but of the ones we have heard of, I'd say Josh King is the most realistic.

For me there’s a few issues; first it’s not the number of injuries although for a small squad hurts, it’s who they are. Raul, Boly, Donk, Jonny, Podence probably 5 of our best players. Which leads me to point 2; if finding ourselves in this situation (which is another question altogether) then why mess with formations and tactics, surely just sticking to a consistent hard drilled back 5 etc is the way whilst we ride the storm and playing kids.

I understand why Nuno wants to progress and develop, but that has to also come with buying and strengthening. Playing a 59 game season with no break and buying very little substance in, has come back to haunt us and potentially last seasons fallout. However, I do feel we will be top 10 but already lost as many as we lost all last season is a worry.

All teams go through dodgy spells and this is ours. The key issue is, how long will it last. We've been fortunate with injuries till now but we were always walking a tightrope in that regard with a small squad.

I personally think we have missed the chance to push on by wasting the last transfer window. I know a lot of people will disagree but I don't see Silva as a 35 mil player. 5 mil maybe. Ait-Nouri not any better than Vinagre.

We have got some promising players but needed more and better for this season rather than focusing too much on the future. This vital that we get experienced players in now. Centre Back, if possible, and obviously a striker.

I don't think Nuno has been happy for a while with our transfer policy so I expect him to make a point on Friday against Palace by playing a very inexperienced team.

2.) 05 Jan 2021 23:58:57
Excellent thread!
Our summer transfer dealing were a disaster, (as I said on this site at the time so its not with hindsight merely the ability to see the obvious), and didn't address the real needs of the squad. Nuno clearly said the squad was too small and unbalanced well thanks to the transfers in and out plus the inevitable ageing of the squad and the unfortunate, (but not entirely unexpected giving the absence of injuries over the past two years), injury crisis it is much worse now!
Marcal was a good buy.
Hoever was a very acceptably makeweight in the Jota deal
Semedo will be ok but we massively over paid both in terms of fee and wages which for a team with FFP issues are important factors
RAN and Vitor are loans with v v high purchase prices that neither appear as yet to be worth but there is a long way to go this season.
But Silva? He is a kid what are the chances of any kid making it? Look at the 2017 England under 17 World cup winning side the best young players in the world - and Fabio is clearly a long long way from that now. 3 years on most have disappeared without trace or have been sold to lower sides for pennies indeed only Foden of the 11, including our own Gibbs White, is playing regularly in the Prem.
Bully sensibly noted that Calvert Lewin - who Everton took a chance on - didn't come good for a couple of years after he was bought by Everton so we should give Silva a couple of years. Excellent point. But firstly Everton paid £1.5m with commensurate wages and we paid £35m and massive wages - see point re FFP but secondly we are now immediately totally reliant on him whilst Calvert Lewin who after those couple of years was 20 and started contributing significantly was not expected to carry the team until he was ready!
This transfer plus the Semedo over pay meant that we didn't/ couldn't afford to make the additional signings we should have.
I want Wolves to win every game and play well and whilst I am v supportive of the club sadly the person responsible for this, and it clearly isn't Nuno, debacle has failed the club and should be gone. I don't think it is wrong to want Wolves to win and be unhappy with people who are stopping that from happening though sheer incompetence - who would be. How many of you would be allowed to perform so obviously badly at work and keep your jobs?
It will be interesting to see what gets done this window?

New to the site; been at the Wolves for 30 years. Know an insider at Athletic close to Utd and Dalot is on the cards. I would imagine 3 signings at least will come in, just maybe not before the season begins, he will most likely opt for AT at right back and Vinagre left back to start. . I expect a centre half, wingback and midfielder, I don't think we'll bring in a striker as keeping our current guys.

Like when we sold Douglas I think we will look back at Doherty and see yet again Nuno and Board were right, they 100% deserve our trust after the last few seasons. When Raul came in, when Neto came in, people were saying 'who? ' and now we have the best 9 in the league!

Few solid sensible signings, Nuno to sign new contract and let's crack on, if anything the biggest challenge will be getting the squad refocused after no pre-season and coming off a long season, to get focused on top 6 challenge again will need work.

Agree with most of what you say. Though I think we have been lucky with Raul's fitness and if he's injured there is no one else who can cover for him. I was surprised we didn't pay the 5m for Oliviera in January I think he would provide decent cover. Knows the league and can hold up play. Plus he's still scoring albeit in Greece obviously. Worth a punt I think.

2.) 02 Sep 2020 12:56:09
You know "an insider at Athletic close to Utd"?

Do you realise how hard that is to believe? If you said you know someone at utd. that would've been some way tangible.

3.) 02 Sep 2020 13:12:19
Why not give Rafa Mir a chance?

4.) 02 Sep 2020 13:37:35
Fair comment Plymouth he's done well at Huesca (a place I've been to though not to be repeated) . Though he's seemed to struggle over here. I'm sure Nuno will know if he can do it.

5.) 02 Sep 2020 13:59:55
With you Debbie, confused. For Utd do we read Manchester? Athletic close to them is Oldham? A little clarity for my feeble brain please.

6.) 02 Sep 2020 15:15:58
He couldn't get in Forest's team, Plymouth so he'd hardly be a suitable deputy in my opinion or, more importantly, Nuno's.

7.) 02 Sep 2020 15:42:21
I see the latest paper thing is Lemar again at 63m for that I'd expect Limahl and the rest of Kadgagoogoo as well!

8.) 02 Sep 2020 17:52:41
Where is campana?

9.) 02 Sep 2020 23:37:11
Damn good question that Nigel, hopefully coming on from the bench for most of next year! Top Goal scorer and named in the team of the tournament in the the last u23 Copa touney, reckon with any luck he could prove a few on here wrong (like Neto and Vinagrere) have about apparent 'futility' in signing players 'for the u23's squad!

10.) 02 Sep 2020 23:52:57
FYI- guys I'm pretty sure Dreaming is referring to 'The Athletic' sports Journal? Please correct me is I'm wrong Dreaming? In which case for those that haven't read it before then its an excellent publication (basically a thinking mans 442) that does in depth pieces across the footballing world? I've read a few articles and they did a fantastic piece on Raul and his hometown and the impact his playing for Wolves has had on local Mexican footy (the have genuinely renamed the entire league after him! ) . Am I right Dreams? Cause if so I am fan and recognise that we may have a poster that genuinely has there finger on the pulse here?! Apologies if I have that wrong?

11.) 03 Sep 2020 07:20:12
Hi Bullys Boy II; you are correct, I should have clarified. It is Athletic the journalist app and platform which is in fact one of the most growing and reliable sources. They have specific journalists who have attachments to football clubs in their area. I’m currently living in Manchester hence the connection.

12.) 03 Sep 2020 09:11:30
My athletic subscription is the best £60 I've spent this year and the reason I get nothing done at work.

13.) 03 Sep 2020 12:55:41
60-00 sounds a lot Sean that with the greatest respect doesn't appear to to tell you anything we don't know. Which of course is next to nothing!

14.) 03 Sep 2020 13:18:38
The contact I was referring to is the rep for Utd attached from athletic, for example he said about Beek going there a week before announced in press. His words 'Dalot is likely' … Again this is purely based on someone in and around the club on a daily basis so not gospel still.

To be honest, it's still underwhelming, I feel we need someone who has played competitively and should be aiming higher. I really hope to see at least 3 solid names coming in over the next week, else I fear Nuno and board relationship may begin to crack.

I do keep needing to tell myself, we have kept everyone apart from Doherty which based on end of season is a good result! However the bench is weak and god forbid this bloody international duty throws up injuries.

15.) 03 Sep 2020 18:34:50

I think it’s very easy to get carried away here; losing a derby hurts more than ever but there’s a combination of factors not just one.

Firstly - Nuno; the one thing I think he’s failed more than anything is being stubborn playing a back 4, where ever won 1 game playing it. (5 with 5-2-3) he needs to forget progression, saying how top 6 last year all had on average 60% possession etc. Our squad is nowhere near the depth and level of the bigger teams in the league. Add injuries in and new players (most trusted leaving) the one thing he shouldn’t have done is tried to fix something which wasn’t broken.

Owners; I don’t think they’ve lost interest or not acting in January market, they’ve always said it’s a long term 10 year plan, with successes and bumps in the road. The club (right or wrong) has a strategy to bring youth in and develop with a key spine to the squad (of which mostly is injured) we can afford this season to be a transition, one which we will need to learn from and not make the same mistakes twice.

Injuries; small squad with 60%+ key injuries will only ever mean one thing. You can’t plan for the amount of injuries, and regardless what people think we’re not a club which can be paying £150,000 a week players to be squad players on the bench. So it’s obvious we will be stretched and with youth instead. It’s massive bad luck not the amount of injuries but who they are, probably our key players. Raul is obvious but Podence has been a miss, Jonny massive, even Boly proved yesterday what he brings. Once you add the fact we let go Doherty and Jota, bought in lads clearly adapting to the league and UK.

Final point, one thing I’ve noticed is some teams are better off without fans, look at Man Utd, West Ham, Southampton, teams where fans turn quick, but then there’s teams which rely on their fans for momentum etc and Wolves are one of those teams. You can see it in their play, second half yesterday at 2-3 playing slow football, passing backwards no way would happen with 32,000 there.

Fixes; Revert back to what we know with a 5-2-3 formation, how can we expect consistent performances with inconsistent team selections? Start focusing on defensive displays and I truly believe Neto, Podence, Traora and Silva will do the rest (we’ve still scored 8 in last 4 games yet not won. )

The league is still tight and random this year, 2-3 wins it all changes.

Nuno needs to come out and dispute the rumours in tie press, show he’s the leader we all believe he is and get the likes of Coady, Neves back under his wing.

No time to panic, it just shows further weakness, as Dendonker stated after the game ‘now is the time to stick together’ COYW.

Dreaming I could have written that myself our thoughts are so close! Spot on mate.

2.) 18 Jan 2021 02:43:56
Dreaming - like your fixes.
Go back to basics, 5 at the back, 2 def mids - stop conceding so many goals.
Yes Neto, Podence and Traore will still get the goals that will enable us to pick up points.
Yes given the way the season is going it will only take a few good games to get back on track - although at moment and with the immediate fixture list that doesn't look so easy. I would take 5 points from the next 5 games -better than 5 from 9 as we have done recently. But it is April that will decide our season!
Nuno just needs to calmly move us back to where we were in style, tactics and selections and forget/ ignore who ever it was that called for the so called progress/ evolution until survival is ensured.
Maybe after a pre season and with both Jimenez and Otto back and a few new signings - an AM, a RCB and sadly probably a new GK - we might be in a position to try and play a little more positively perhaps go 4, 2,3,1 but at the moment we need to be safe and stay secure with 5,2,3 or maybe even 5,3,2.

06 Jan 2021 22:11:56
With Gibbs-W being recalled and Cultrone it would indicate looking for answers and cover internally than purchasing.

Although if the right deal is there I can see a striker coming in, someone like King from Bournemouth.

I still feel we need to sort a defender out, it’s too risky only have Boly, Siass and Coady with Kilman as backup who isn’t top 6 quality.

It feels more and more like owners and management are seeing this season as a transition, a mid table finish and relook at it once players are fit and next transfer window. We have to trust them as it’s based on results but can’t help feel with the league so random this year we’ve missed a real opportunity to get into top 4/ 6.

DreamingIsFree

1.) 07 Jan 2021 09:56:07
It's looking like cutrone is going to get some games now let's hope it works out for him and mgw, although personally I think Josh king is worth a punt at around 10 million , he could do a decent job.

2.) 07 Jan 2021 14:54:57
Dreaming I again agree with your conclusion. This sadly was a bad year to decide to " transition" and indeed is a missed opportunity. Not so sure that we can simply transition into mid table though as the league is v tough and competitive and once you drop off a level for the fall away is - as we are seeing - spectacular.

On current form we are def much lower than mid table indeed on current form we are strong relegation candidates but thanks largely to our v reasonable results pre Jimenez injury I believe we should have enough to stave off serious concerns.

I hope we can regain our place in the upper echelons but other than us it seems no one willingly gives up a place and we will have a major fight on our hands to return to where we were let alone move on to the levels we were hoping for this season.

Given the abject failure of the transition this year we will in fact have two years work to do next summer - assuming nothing much is done this Jan and given the severe damage done to our finances both by the virus and our own misguided operations last summer we will be operating with one hand behind our backs.

If Jimenez doesn't come back to tip top form and/ or we are forced to sell one of the diamonds in our crown - Neto, Podence or Traore I fear that the automatic resumption of our serene progress of the previous 3 ears may be a big ask.
Time will tell.

03 Sep 2020 10:23:10
I can’t help think missing Cash for £16m to Villa shows how European centric we are in recruitment and ignoring the UK as potential. We let Doherty go to a league rival and could have snapped up a player, who I believe would have been a perfect fit and for cheap.

We’re slowly becoming a Mendez holding pen and don’t get me wrong it’s worked and if we continue to win football matches I’ll be the first to celebrate, but he will have priorities to the bigger clubs he works for and have higher £ to spend making his margins bigger. Which could also explain why Utd and others he’s associated with are doing business and we haven’t yet.

They seem to back Nuno and he’s said we have to bring new players in so I do expect them in, start of the season however I also expect a rough start.

We knew others would strengthen Chelsea, Spurs, Everton etc the question has to be why we haven’t with less than 2 weeks before KO. We know Nuno doesn’t just throw new signings in, giving them time to settle so as mentioned expect a slow start, but let’s stay behind Nuno whatever happens!

My post yesterday to clarify it’s ‘athletic’ the journalist platform and their connection with Utd, where Dalot is still ‘likely’ .

DreamingIsFree

1.) 03 Sep 2020 14:13:48
I'm sure we'll get some quality in before the end of the window but it's the start of the season that worries me. We will be without Jonny, doc and prob Traore. If we're rock bottom after 4 games it's a difficult rut to get out of, even with new signings. Things just seem to be conspiring against us at the moment. A win at Sheff Utd would be massive boost.

In one way feels desperate and rushed, in another they’ve acted on what’s needed. His record isn’t bad, I like he’s same style to Raul and will be more of a target man in the box. I still can’t help but feel now is the time with Jonny returning soon to go back to 5-2-3!

Only one thing I’d say for Traora is his stats don’t tell the whole story, he’s been left out a lot and harshly at times, he’s not had any target for his crosses or hard work and clearly been told to go backwards as a tactic. Also he’s sometimes simply on the pitch for a tactic, for sample of an opponent had a corner most teams they’d throw all their defenders leaving a solitary midfielder but leave Traora at halfway teams have to keep 2-3 players back. This type of work of his I feel does go unnoticed a lot of the time. Is he happy? Doesn’t look like it, but nobody should be in that side right now as we’re not winning and not performing good enough. Without a doubt give Traora a target man and freedom to go down the middle at times, he’s a different animal. With Raul out i'd keep him this season.
