January will be big and to be honest we need to stop the Portuguese link for now. We have tried it for 5 years and it hasn’t really got us that far. Yes there are good players from there but in the last game Portugal played there was only Neves in the squad playing. We need a CB, Attacking mid and a couple of strikers. We need to look closer to home and get those who can make a big impact knowing the league already.
I really am disappointed this morning as this season and honestly the tail end of last season really has made it even more than useual painful to watch the wolves.

Until we get a proper replacement in the job Thelwell used to do I fear what you say is wishful thinking vbwolf. To a certain degree at youth level we seem to be looking at the South American market which is promising but at first team level we are still to highly reliant on the Mendes connection IMHO.

Proven Premier League players aren't necessary but what is necessary is the right mix of skill, ablity, stamina, speed and 'bottle '. Portugal has its fair quota if flair players but apart from when they've had standout players (Eusebio and Ronaldo) their teams haven't really produced at international level. We need to be fishing around in several ponds to get the right mix and balance and not the same pond each and every time. And that goes for managers too!

I understand what people are saying about our Portuguese contingent but let's not forget that they got us into the Premier and so far have kept us there.
We do have quite a number of foreign players other than Portuguese, French, Spanish, South American, Korean etc along with English and Irish so perhaps a bit unfair to pin the blame on our Portuguese players, especially as some are world class.
The problem lay with the manager.

We haven't got a single world class player,Winton, Portuguese or otherwise. To be world class a player would need to get into a theoretical world team squad of say 23 players in a World Cup. There's no problem with Portuguese players per se, it's just that we've got too many similar players and they are mostly Portuguese. As mentioned before, we need a better mix.

Nuno built up a excellent family team spirit with Coady at the heart. Lage dismantled this for some unknown reason, now Everton are having the benefit of our captain. No grit or fight and no heart, even Sa seems to be a different a keeper. Can't think of a single plus from the Lage reign. They said he had a reputation for fast attacking football, just have left it behind in Portugal!

Not just Lage Ray, I'd include Shi and Sellars with him, all of them culpable. I had my doubts before the window, they allayed those fears with the incomings but then re-instated them with the outgoings.

I agree Longmynd, Shi decided he could run the club on his own without the likes of Thelwell with a very limited knowledge of the game, especially the premier league. Haven't got a clue what Sellers is supposed to do.
