Bad luck Rated, but 3 important points in the bag. Had the misfortune of having Andy Townsend commentate and boy, was he anti-Wolves! Ex Vile after all. 🙄.

3 points, goal for the debutant, one for Podence, well deserved. Boost to confidence all round.

Very good tonight, in a whole lot of great performances Neves, Podence, RAN, Donck, Semedo, still the skipper shines bright, what a man! COYW.

Taff - didn't you predict the score!

Didn't see the game so would love to hear from those that did
Player ratings?
Was RAN as good as the commentators have said?
Were we lucky - Palace had a goal and 2 pens turned down by VAR?
Should we have scored more?
Why didn't we?
Did we play for the entire 90 mins or were their passive periods?
How was Traore when he came on?
What did we do differently?
What can we still improve on?
ETC ETC!

TFIG, RAN was superb, on another day he could have given a penalty away on Zaha but apart from that he was excellent. The goal and the disallowed penalty from VAR were correct decisions at last!

(We deserve a bit of VAR going our way for once) . We absolutely should have scored more, Dendoncker especially had his chances and a bigger scoreline wouldn't have flattered us.

There was a 10-15 min block at the start of the second half where we seemed to slow down, however we were still dangerous on the counter attack and Podence should have made it 3-0.

The only difference Traore made was the formation went 3-5-2 from 3-4-3 as Moutinho came on at the same time. It does worry me that after his unbelievable season last time out he appears to be going backwards (which upsets me to say that) .

The best thing which we should be taking from the game is that when Semedo or RAN had the ball down the flanks we were getting 4-5 players into the box rather than just leaving it to Raul (possibly the reason why he didn't have the best game and others got on the scoresheet, which is nice to take the pressure off his shoulders for a bit).

If we keep progressing with this new philosophy of loading the penalty area we will scare out of a lot of teams, but we may pay the price in some games against teams that counter attack as well as we do (e.g. Liverpool) . All in all though, a superb game and we never looked like giving it away.

I think you're correct golden boy about paying the price against counter attacking sides. In our first season back we did well for the first quarter but had a bad run of 6 games. We had to switch from 343 to 352 to stop the slide and I fear we may have to address that again at some point. All of that said another clean sheet, a great debut by Alt Nouri, 2 goals for only the second match against an established mid table side but still work in progress. As Nigel said shame about Newcastle but far more positives than not from what I can see.

Old Gold- yes I did predict the score and I’m doing an extra ticket on the lottery tonight. Many positives taken from last night hope he keeps the same starting line up for next game, very positive!

Many thanks - Golden.
Delighted that at last you say we were actually getting bodies into he box.
2 attacking WBs sounds really exciting and from what I gather Podence and Neto were both brilliant?
Also v worried re Traore but maybe the 352 option (played as an option either from the start away from home or as variant in games where we are getting much change from the opposition) might be the answer to his renaissance - either with the 3 CMs that played yesterday with him or Podence dropping into the ACM or 10 role? .
As I said in my earlier post about Traore ( and/ or the system when he plays) I don't mind if we are playing a style that may hurt us against the better teams if it means we beat the middle teams that previously we have only drawn with or lost to - Newcastle last week, Brighton for ever etc etc regularly.
Lets be honest we were always going to struggle if the Man Citys and Liverpools "turn up" (particularly if we give them a goal start from a penalty) no matter what system we play.
But beating the middle (and that is everyone down from Liverpool and City except perhaps MU, Chelsea and Spurs if they are playing well or are at their own place! ) teams regularly should mean we will get far more points than we did last year and may even give us Champions League football!
Wish I'd stumped up the money now!

Just for interest people, I watched the game on Bein sports (streamed), yes I had to listen to Andy Townsend (not in his tactics truck anymore) but the camera angles/ replays etc were very good and was generally a better watch than Sky coverage.

{Ed001's Note - they buy in coverage from Sky or whoever is covering the game. They all do. It is one set of cameras at the ground and everyone else just buys the rights to show it. It is only the pre-match/half-time and post-match stuff that is their own.}

I watched it on NBCsports sounds like we had same commentary team as Townsend was commentator there too.

Thought we looked really good in the first half, with Neves and Dendonker working rally well as central duo. I also think the format change when bringing Traore is a sound move. Unfortunately, I also agree with others that, although in theory, it would appear to be the right move, to help shore things up, Moutinho coming on has not delivered the desired result. Would have rather have seen Saiss coming into a central three. Don’t know if Otasowie’s inclusion on the bench was as a central midfielder or back three sub. Perhaps he has been identified as the next one to transition into first team consideration.
I know it is ‘picky’ but could have given Silva more than the extra time slot. If he’s going to get experience and up to speed needs at least last ten minutes plus extra time.

If Liverpool get hammered today we go up to second.
