Well, straight from Jeff Shi's mouth: We will not be spending big in the summer. A few windows back he told us the money was there if the right players become available. Heaven knows where that money went then, or was it to keep Lage sweet?

What a joke! Relegation battle next season then?

I heard it as 'We don't earn as much as the bigger clubs so can't spend as much as them but we are growing the income streams in other ways'

Perhaps, just perhaps, he's playing his cards close to his chest. Let's face it if he said, 'Yeah we have £300m to spend' Wolves' target parent clubs would suddenly be upping the price of their players? Just a thought.

Same as how I heard it Jas.

Wolves have to address the lack of goals and also probably the midfield if/when Neves leaves and those players will have to be at least as good if not better as what we've had.
I know they also want to introduce academy players as they develop to the right level, so we may see more of the likes of MGW and Cundle, etc.
Which is fine so long as we are not 'relying' on too many youngsters.
Either way to talk of relegation at this stage is nonsense.

What do peeps mean by 'spending big'. We can never match the big boys, and frankly should not try. Big for us has to be relative and within our earning capacity. If we spend beyond that for one year we have to cut back the next to balance. I like what Geoff says, prudence before vanity.

BelfastWolf, tell me where in that interview did it come straight from Jeff’s mouth that “we will not spend big”?
Like others such as Jas M have already replied, our spending is totally different to other clubs and there is a 20 yr plan (not 10 yrs).
Long term stability and growth year on year in squad size, infrastructure and income streams (which are being expanded constantly.
Also, you don’t announce to a selling club that there is plenty of money to spend as we all know what happens (eg: sir Jack).
I never cease to be amazed how many fans love to predict our doom!
Don’t forget we have money available, money coming in from players out on loan (Vinagre, etc.) plus any sales we may allow.
Oh and stop believing everything you read on Newsnow. They are trying to sell stories.

A few at high prices or more at more realistic prices? It could mean anything.

In reply to Tommo1970, on the Wolves site today in interview Jeff Shi said, verbatim: "J.S. has warned W.W.supporters that Fosun will not be spending big in the transfer window". Now take that whatever way you like. Just quoting directly what he said.

I agree with Rated and Jas's reading of what was said.

Also what does spending big mean? is that £300 mill,200 mill,100 mill as teams like Chelsea and Spurs are promising to spend 150mill+.

I doubt we'll spend that much but if we spend for example net 50 million (which in premier league terms is about average based on last seasons summer window) then I'd expect us to be stronger next season than this which if so sticks to the original 10 years plan and should not be sniffed at (or derided).

NB by net I mean on top of any money gained from sales just to avoid any confusion.

Belfast: the fact that your quote starts with ‘JS states’ mean that someone else wrote it, he didn’t say it.
After today’s revelation that they are continuing to build up the revenue streams and looking at stock market investment in 2-5 yrs means they have a long term strategy to make and keep us at the higher end of the premier league.
That my friend is how to build a sustainable business, not by splashing ridiculous sums of money and falling away after 5 years!

Obviously, Tommo, you haven't even bothered to read the interview. You're getting in to semantics. He gave the interview (ok-allegedly)to Alex Dicken and it's still there now. Read the first paragraph. Of course, you can put your own spin on it.

Yes Belfast I’ve read it. I wouldn’t call it a spin but my opinion is that they are poking towards a long term plan to make the club sustainable for years to come. He also says he would spend if it was to the benefit in the long term.
While I appreciate you have your own opinion, my take is that everything he is saying is from a business point of view and if it means that we are still a top ten premier club in 10 yrs then I for one would see that as a huge improvement on the previous 40 yrs of my Wolves experience.
Let’s not forget, it takes time to build these new funding streams and as he says about the issues that Newcastle will face it’s about sustainable income year on year. Makes sense to me

We don't have to spend big to improve the squad.

We do not require a keeper to replace Ruddy - Sarkic and Sondergaard will give us cover. We do not require any wing backs as with Semedo, Jonny, RAN, Giles and Hoever we have plenty of cover. Would be nice to bring in a Centre back but with Coady, Kilman, Toti, Mosquera, Boly and Donk all capable of playing there maybe one addition (either Tarkowski on a free) or look at either (Oscar Mingueza - part of the Neves deal) or Merih Demiral or Goncalo Inacio who have been linked in the past. Midfield is interesting but if we can get in Nico and Puig (as part of the deal for Neves) I would take it, with Palinha and promote Cundle this would leave us good competition in midfield with or without Moutinho (who I would keep). Wide attacking positions are covered with Neto, Podence, Hwang and Chiquinho. The striking department is where we urgently need reinforcements - take a look at Myram Boadu or Hugo Ekitike both around the £15-20M mark and/or Emmanuel Dennis who scored goals for Watford.

In evaluation if we sell Neves (and replace with the 3 talented players Barcelona are offering), Traore, Boly and Dendonker (who would be surplus if got the players in), MGW (who probably would want a move to Forest) and Jimenez (try to get a sizeable value before its nothing) with the wage saving from Ruddy, Saiss and Marcal we would probably break even with most of the players we require.

OK i'm not Lage/Shi or Sellars but these are players that are not out of our reach.

I fear a relegation battle too like never before since Fosun anyway

Our team looks tired we need an injection of dynamism up front and strength at the back

Excellent post CYRU5.

I'd also add as CB cover we could call on Marques who has excelled for the U23's (according to the U23 manager).

For striker we also have Dadashov returning from loan - didn't have a great time stats wise (2 goals in 23 games) but has looked good coming back from a cruciate ligament tear and may be worth a go next season (especially if does well pre-season).
